(Germany, 1935) is Professor of art history and media theory at the School for New Media at Karlsruhe, and also has held several professorships in Germany and the United States. He is a member of several academies, including the Medieval Academy of America and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has written books on Medieval Italian and Byzantine art, on images and their audience, on Christian and pre-Christian images, and recently on Dutch painting and on the end of art history. His many books include Tradition in Modernism, Bild und Kult (1990), Die Erfindung des Gemäldes; das erste Jahrhundert der niederländischen Malerei (1994), Das unsichtbare Meisterwerk (1998) and Das Ort der Bilder (1998).
